  2. DESIGNER'S  CLUB  USER'S  GUIDE

  4. All documentation assumes you have a basic understanding of how to use your 
  5. computer and the programs you have purchased for it.
  6.  
  7. BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  8. -------------------
  9. Designer's Club images require application(s) that are compatible with the EPS 
  10. file format. EPS images are saved as Adobe Illustrator 3.0 files. Any other 
  11. hardware requirements will be based primarily on the applications you use and 
  12. the type of final output you plan to produce. For best results, your printer 
  13. should be PostScript compatible.

  15. IMPORTANT
  16. ----------
  17. The files for the PC users are in an invisible folder on the CD named PC_USERS. 
  18. Mac users may be able to see this folder in certain applications when opening or 
  19. placing a file.  DO NOT use the files in this folder on your Mac.  These files 
  20. are saved in a PC format. If the PC files are used on a Mac, results can be 
  21. unpredictable.

  23. ART SELECTION

  25. Adobe« Acrobat Reader Installation Instructions
  26.  
  27. The Adobe« Acrobat Reader must be installed on your computer first in order to 
  28. view any Acrobat (PDF) files.
  29.  
  30. The installation program for "Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01" can be found in the Adobe Acrobat
  31. folder located in the "Extensis Portfolio Browser" folder. Windows 3.1 users should use the
  32. 16-bit installer (ar16e301.exe) and Windows 95 users should use the 32-bit installation program
  33. (ar32e301.exe). Double-click the file to run the installer.

  38. ** Printed Pictorial Index **
  39. This provides thumbnail and file name for each image in the issue.

  41. **EXTENSIS PORTFOLIO BROWSER**
  42. Included on the CD is a copy of the Extensis Portfolio Browser. 
  43. The Extensis Portfolio Browser can be run off the CD, no installation is required. 
  44. Simply open the "Browser" folder and then open the "Extensis Portfolio Browser" folder
  45. and double-click the "Portfolio Browser.exe" file.  Select the Browser folder and choose the 
  46. the electronic catalog you want to open. In the Extensis Portfolio Browser folder is a
  47. file called "Portfolio 3.0 Browser QSG.pdf" this file contains instructions on how to use
  48. the Portfolio Browser. The Adobe« Acrobat Reader must be installed on your computer first
  49. in order to view any Acrobat (PDF) files. The installation program for
  50. "Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.01" can be found in the Adobe Acrobat folder located in the Browser folder. Windows 95 users
  51. should use the 32-bit installation program (ar32e301.exe). Double-click the file to run the
  52. installer.

  54. Extensis Portfolio Browser application: This application allows you to "browse" 
  55. a catalog of images. You can view thumbnail versions of the images in the 
  56. catalog, search for images by keywords, preview images, and copy them to your 
  57. hard drive.

  59. Current month Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images in the 
  60. current month's Designer's Club package.
  61.  
  62. Current web Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the web images in the 
  63. current month's Designer's Club package.
  64.  
  65. Current year Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images from January 
  66. of the current year through the present. 
  67.  
  68. Current year web Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the web images from 
  69. January of the current year through the present.

  71. ** Multi-Ad Search **
  72. Because keywords and descriptions are attached to the image files, they can be 
  73. used with Search. When you Add Files to your catalog, Search will pick up the 
  74. keywords and descriptions from the image files.

  76. A WARNING TO COLOR USERS
  77. -------------------------
  78. The nature of color in desktop publishing is unpredictable. The way a color 
  79. image looks on screen does not necessarily reflect the way it will look when it 
  80. is printed, and different output devices and types of paper may produce 
  81. different results. We recommend that you contact your service bureau and printer 
  82. so that they can insure the kind of color reproduction you need.

  84. USING THE CLIP ART
  85. ------------------
  86. ** PAGE LAYOUT PROGRAMS **
  87. Open your page layout program, create a new document and place the EPS file as 
  88. you would any other images. The following page layout programs are compatible 
  89. with the EPS file format:
  90.     PageMaker
  91.     QuarkXpress        
  92.         
  93. ** DRAW PROGRAMS **
  94. Open your draw program and OPEN the EPS file. These images can be manipulated 
  95. like any other EPS image. The following draw programs are compatible with the 
  96. EPS file format:
  97.     Adobe Illustrator
  98.     FreeHand
  99.     Corel Draw
  100. Many of your Designer's Club EPS images are provided as layered illustrations. 
  101. This means that several elements can be lifted out of a single image and used as 
  102. stand-alone artwork. In order to pull apart or separate the layers of an EPS 
  103. file, a PostScript draw program like Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand is 
  104. necessary.

  106. If your application was not listed above, please refer to your manual for 
  107. compatibility.
